Been busy working and such. I've been consolidating machines.

Still need to rebuild my desktop PC.

Keeping the old Sparc box. I've scrapped NetBSD as it does not have the software I need for it. Working on a custom setup of Solaris 10 without the JavaDesktop system on it. Using CDE and working on putting KDE on it.

Rebuilt my file-server. Yay for mass storage. Now if I could only get more hard drives for it. #! linux is awesome. I do suggest it if you need a sleek system to start working with. Lots of potential for a long term, stable build.

Oh, and VM's are spiffy.

NetBSD is great. It really is. You have the potential to build up your own machine with all the stuff you want and none of the fluff that you don't want.

However, if you have an old Sparc64 box, this becomes difficult as not all of the software is built for your machine. You have to pull down the source and build it. I don't care about the time. I can wait 3 days for something to compile as I have other machines to use in the meantime. However, I would have liked to have known this earlier. So yeah, in my spare time, I shall be fiddling with building a couple of old Sun boxes.

One is an Sparc Ultra10 workstation. I used one in college and liked it. Finally got around to picking one up to work with at home. Still like it despite the frustration of Oracle's methods of providing support - security updates for example. You pay a yearly subscription for their "free" software.

The other is an old Sun Enterprise 250 (Google "Sun E250" if you really wanna know) that was headed to the dumpster. It's got two 400 mhz Sparc64 processors. It looks to be fun to tinker with once I can get the right kind of hard drives for it. I need some old Ultra Wide SCSI drives for it. I'm sure I'll get to it all eventually.

I picked up a Mac Mini. It's a tiny desktop computer. It uses a smidge more power than my laptop so it is more feasible to keep it on when working on lengthy video-based projects I do from time to time. It'll also last longer when running from the UPS once I get things ready for it. For what I need it for, it'll do just fine. For larger projects I'll use one or more of my other machines.

Hmmm... I have to update my list of stuff below too.
